The most interesting thing about any place is rarely the thing everyone photographs.
Travel photography tends to collapse into two categories: the landmark shot and the 'authentic local life' shot that's just as staged. Both have their place, but neither is documentary work. Documentary work is where travel photography gets genuinely interesting.
This course is built around the idea that every place has a story that most visitors never find, and that finding it requires a different approach than showing up with a shot list of famous views. Through video lessons, written content, and interactive exercises, you'll develop the skills to photograph places, people, and moments with honesty, working within the constraints of limited time, unfamiliar environments, and the ethical considerations that come with photographing people and cultures that aren't your own.
The result is a body of work that holds up as more than a travel album. Images that communicate something specific about a place rather than confirming what people already expected to see.
Inside the course.
People and culture with respect
How to photograph people and cultural moments ethically and authentically. Approaching subjects with respect, navigating consent, and avoiding the extractive dynamic that travel photography can fall into.
Finding the story beneath the surface
How to research a place before you arrive, ask better questions when you're there, and identify the images that say something specific rather than something generic.
Available light in unfamiliar places
Working with whatever light you're given across unpredictable environments: markets, interiors, harsh midday sun, low-light evenings. How to adapt quickly without losing the shot.
Shooting with limited time
How to work intentionally when you only have a few hours or days in a location. Pre-trip planning, prioritization, and how to stay present rather than just ticking off locations.
